Nepali Population in United States

Posted on: March 8th, 2012 by admin

Dear Nepalese Community Members,

Hope this message finds you in your best.

As you may recall, in 2010, previous executive board of ANA initiated a project to help in the U.S. Census. ANYA, the ANA youth team spearheaded the effort to get all residents in United States of Nepali descent to participate in the U.S. Census. Prior to this census there was no official data for Nepali demographic. Our efforts, along with help from many of you who disseminated the instruction on how to fill out the form have borne the results. For the first time in history of United States Census, we now have quantifiable population snapshot of Nepalis.

The top five metro area of Nepali population in U.S. are:
1. New York
2. Washington, D.C
3. Dallas
4. Boston
5. San Francisco

There are 59,490 people in the United States who described themselves as Nepali in the 2010 Census. We agree with other experts that this is an undercount due to various reasons. Still, this is the first time we have the quantifiable population figure.

Aside from general informational purposes, we believe, this gives all of the organizations geared toward helping the community great opportunity to serve our community better in all aspects. We welcome all to think about this and find a way to collaborate during the 30th ANA Convention (2nd FoANA ) in Dallas, Texas during June 29-July 1 2012.

Happy Spring!
